Political Issues to Ponder
- Why can’t someone develop a test to determine who, among our elected officials at all levels, truly work for the welfare of our nation and its most needy citizens instead of acting for special interests and personal benefit?
- What course of action would you decree if you could choose the steps that would be best for our nation to take in order to reduce our national debt? Are Americans capable of the World War II sacrifices that are required to improve this situation?
- Have you ever thought that you were a mute standing miles away from your governmental representatives as you try to convey your views to them versus the wealthy who have a microphone and are only inches away from the politician’s ears?
- Who are your political/governmental/ service heroes of our country and why are they your favorites? Do they rate above the greatest entertainment and athletic personalities?
- Could you vote for someone to be President of the United States if he/she were: atheistic, gay, twice acquitted of murder, over age 90, physically deformed but able to function, very poorly dressed with extremely long hair, heavily tattooed with various body piercings, etc. (add your own other conditions)? If not, to what facts would you object and why couldn’t he/she still be a great leader with this/these condition(s)?
- How intelligent do you believe that the average American voter is? What are the proper criteria that one should consider when voting?
- Should there be a constitutional amendment banning politicians from proposing a constitutional amendment as their answer to remedy any problem?
- What is your opinion of someone who exercises his/her constitutional right to burn our country’s flag or kneels during a rendition of our national anthem? John Tortorella, a professional hockey coach, was not afraid to place himself above the law when he stated that any of his players who performed either of these actions would be benched.
- Do you have any idea of the incredibly high level of financial waste and/or pork legislation that independent groups say exists in our government?
- During a dark moment, when our country needed decisive and sacrificial action, do you recall the phrase “Let’s roll” uttered by the passengers of US Flight 93 that crashed in Shanksville, PA as they righteously rose to provide the best possible solution to a crisis instead of meekly whimpering, a course which would have led to worse consequences?
- Knowing what you now know, if you could select one place to have been in history so that you could learn, change, or do something, what would your choice be?
- For what causes do you believe that you would be willing to die or at least willing to take serious risks? Is there anything in this area beyond yourself and your loved ones that would reveal the courage nestled within you?
- Do you know the conditions our country would have confronted if the atomic bombs were not dropped on Japan at the end of WWII?
- Do you believe that one cannot best appreciate a concept until one has experienced its opposite? For example, do you truly savor your good health or would you relish it more if you had experienced extreme illness that almost caused your death until you rebounded? Do many of us take our freedoms for granted because we have never suffered the oppression of a dictatorship?
- Can you comprehend the good that could be accomplished if those able were to contribute just one dollar weekly to a public service fund to be used for those clearly in need through no fault of their own? Could such a setup ever simply be implemented without a bureaucratic hierarchy?
- Is developing expert knowledge of our government and history in the minds of our youth the proper goal so that they will become worthwhile practicing and sacrificial citizens? In times of need, will quoting the Constitution verbatim forestall any threats to our land? What can be done to instill American ideals in one’s heart so that there is no question about proper action being taken during difficulties?
- Can you explain when, how, and to what extent our nation should become involved in another country’s affairs?
- Do you believe that politicians are sacrificing America’s welfare by not honoring the following statement that I read?: “The toughest part of leadership is telling people they have to do something that involves pain.”
- Is there any more important position for a citizen to assume than to be a gadfly as Socrates was?
- To what extent do you believe that you can affect the future through positive action?
- Is it wise for the government to promote lotteries when a tremendously high percentage (99.9%) of people are doomed to lose? Is the lottery, as I once read, “a tax on the stupid?” If so, is it commendable to take advantage of these people?
- If you were not born an American citizen, could you do everything now required to become one?
- What do you believe is the biggest mistake American leaders have ever made? What do you believe is the most serious problem now confronting our country?
